Rhythm Riot is my absolute favorite way to improve rhythm skills in a group, though it works equally well one on one. Playing engages all the components of rhythm: pulse, seeing the notation, performing the notation, hearing the rhythm, and changing meter and tempo. It can last for 2 minutes or a whole class, depending on the time available. I have discovered that I can use the card deck alone when introducing reading a new rhythm. By selecting the cards displaying that rhythm, I can flash them for the student to perform in varying contexts. And it is just plain fun!

SO many uses of this game! The versatility and flexibility of this game especially in regard to range of difficulty for the game cards are also immediately apparent. Quick game to use in private lessons, but most effective in group settings. The game cards can be used independent of the game itself in so many ways. They can be used as rhythm sight-reading: have student select a “path” through the card by marking 4 or more measures and execute. Add a creative aspect by having them sight play the tricky rhythms. Great for ear training and “kids” of all ages! Don’t forget that adults like a game just as much as the kids!
